Aromatherapy

OnTarget Massage Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help promote homoeostasis (a posh word for balance!) within the body. Essential oils are highly aromatic and are absorbed into the body via products and massage. These then work on a holistic level within the body and can work on many different levels; physically, mentally and emotionally. Each oil has its own therapeutic properties and oils can be used in a variety of ways. Essential oils are often referred to as “natures medicine cabinet”. Aromatherapy can be a great way to support existing medical conditions or side effects from long term conditions or the effects of long term medication.

Please note: Essential oils should never be taken internally, nor, should they be use to supplement medical care or treatment

Skin Care Tips

for you to practice at home

I only use Neal’s Yard Remedies products in my facials and are the base for most of my other therapies. These are aromatherapy-based products and work on a holistic level to help create homoeostasis.

The reason I choose to work with Neal’s Yard Remedies is because they contain ingredients which are natural, this meaning they do not contain hormone or endocrine disrupting chemicals. This is something that was extremely important to me when choosing a brand to use, due to my work with women who are going through many different hormone changes.

Massage Treatment

Massage can help to promote relaxation, it can help to reduce fatigue and can aid sleep. It can also benefit the digestive system, immune system, circulatory system and promotes a sense of wellbeing (encouraging the body’s natural detoxification process). Massage can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which helps to naturally calm our body.
Exercise can cause micro tears in muscle, this can cause soreness, knots, and can even shorten in length. This can all have a detrimental effect on the range of movement from that particular joint. Given sufficient recovery time the muscle can repair and become stronger.

Inactivity can also have the same effect, such as sitting at a desk for a long duration of time. In people with desk jobs this can cause tightened lower back muscles (causing lower back pain) tightened and shortened thigh muscles, this can then cause poor posture and referred neck and shoulder pain.

With all my massages I combine techniques (sports, remedial, deep tissue, trigger point amongst others) based on your needs and requirements. I will also include some stretching if I feel this is appropriate. I will also give you some tools and techniques that you can use on yourself to help maximise the benefits of each session. I will advise on stretching and posture to help support you long term.

Thai Foot Massage

Thai foot massage is a massage of the lower legs and feet that is well established in Thailand, it has influences from Japan, Korea and China. This type of massage originated about 2000 years ago. Thai foot massage has elements of shiatsu, reflexology, Chinese massage and yoga, all incorporated into the massage itself. It has also become an integral part of Thai massage.

Thai foot massage involves hands on stretching and massage, along with use of a stick to stimulate the reflex points which correspond to the internal organs of the body. These reflex points are stimulated to promote general health and wellbeing. To this day it is still taught and practised in the temples of Thailand. Thai foot massage can help stimulate the internal organs and can give the receiver a beautiful holistic therapy session, help balance the mind, encouraging wellbeing and a good state of mind.

As I am also qualified in Hot Stone massage I do incorporate this into the Thai Foot massage routine that I offer, mainly when the foot is wrapped. Having small warm stones between your feet is just divine, particularly in the dull and cold months.

Benefits of Thai Foot Massage can include

  • Improved circulation of the leg
  • Stimulated lymphatic drainage
  • Helps remove toxins
  • Helps to boost the immune system
  • Reduces stiffness and Improves flexibility around the ankle joint
  • Detoxification
  • Accelerated physical healing
  • Relaxing and stress relieving
  • Improved sleep and stimulation of the mind

Warm Bamboo Massage

What may seem like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots and perhaps deeper associations than simply bodywork. Today, bamboo massage is touted as Bamboo Fusion, Tian di Bamboo Massage, or simply promoted at high-end spas as the latest in exotic treatments or for massage therapists as a new tool, but bamboo be much more than a new trend or accessory. Bamboo massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameters to provide deep-tissue work. The sticks are heated and incorporated into the massage by using them to move arms legs, perform stretching and to also massage with. The massage itself promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, and lymphatic drainage and provides a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

Lava Shell Massage

Choose a 60 or 90 minute therapy for an unforgettable and sublime experience.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot & Cold Stone Massage

The words above are all words that my clients have used following a hot stone massage.

“Hot Stones” and “Massage” I hear you say, I bet you are imagine stones lined up down your back in a spa aren’t you? Don’t get me wrong the “Hot Stone Massage” I provide is soothing, relaxing and sublime but it can also be used in a slightly different way.

After receiving around 6 hours of “Hot Stone Massage” myself whilst doing a 4 day intensive course, I cannot deny that “Hot Stone Massage” takes muscle relaxation to a whole new level, here comes the “but”, they do also have great remedial benefits.

They are excellent for being able to perform compression work, stripping of the muscle and reducing inflammation (using cold stones). Stones can be used instead of thumbs and elbows to help alleviate problems such as Piriformis syndrome, frozen shoulder and super tight scalenes (neck and shoulders) which can be responsible for migraines and frequent headaches.

Treating clinically and remedially using “Hot Stone Massage” is far more pleasant for the client, this can lead to greater relaxation and they then receive greater benefit from the massage. The heat from the “Hot Stone Massage” means that the trigger points can be treated a lot quicker and more effectively too. Heat can be very beneficial to the body but so can cold, acute Injury will often incur immediate inflammation around the site of the pain. We all know that ice is recommended to help reduce the inflammation and also the cold can sometimes numb the area and help alleviate the pain.

There is question around whether heat or cold should be used on an injury. Once the initial inflammation has decreased I love using heat, as it gets everything going, however lets not forget that for chronic and reoccurring issues we can actually combine the two!

Cold can also help reduce the area of micro tears in muscles in acute problems. So if you have any damage to your muscles or tendons (such as tears) by applying heat this could make them expand. Having cold stones applied to inflammation can have a very beneficial effect on the body (encouraging fresh blood, pain relief and shrinking of any tears etc) However then when hot stones are applied to the area they can provide a rush of blood. This can then speed up the flushing of toxins before then applying yet more colder stones to reduce the area of micro tears. Don’t worry the cold stones aren’t that cold, they are kept at room temperature they just feel cooler due to having hot stones applied! I always remind clients that massage helps to speed up, and even encourages, the body’s healing process. The use of “Hot Stone Massage” can make the experience more intense and together we should get better results and quicker!

"I have been going for regular massages with Gemma at Ontargetmassage for about 2 years now and I would highly recommend her services to anyone. She does a wide range of treatments and techniques, but the hot stone massage is my favourite and very professionally executed. I have ongoing persistent problems with a very tense shoulder muscle and Gemma uses various techniques to ease the muscles and help relieve the tension in that area."

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling

Hopi Ear Candling is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries in many cultures throughout the world. They are hollow tubes made from unbleached cotton or linen and hardened with beeswax.

You will lie on your side on a massage table and a protective cloth with a slit in it will be placed over the ear. The ear candle will be lit and gently inserted into the opening of the ear.

Once the therapy is completed, it will be repeated on the other ear. During the therapy session you may experience gentle heat around the ear area. You may hear popping sounds and a pleasant crackling as the ingredients are burning.

At the end of the session you will be given a 15 minute face massage, using draining and anti ageing techniques to compliment the benefits of the Hopi Ear Candling.

45 minutes £35 – includes facial massage
60 minutes £45 – includes cleanse tone and mini anti ageing facial massage (includes neck and décolletage)
